One of the things I love about Canada is the mixture of cultures. When I walk around here, I see all kinds of hair and skin colours, I hear different accents and languages spoken. And all those cultures seem to mingle. A typical country of immigrants (first or more generations).
The presence of so many different cultures became even more clear during the soccer (football) World Championships. (I know, it sounds like it is over, but in a way it is for the Dutch team) People were showing their country of preference with little flags on the cars. It was nice to see the variety of flags driving by! And someone said "I cheer for the German team because I have German roots", which I didn't know. Or English roots, or fill in what country. Of course it helped that Canada didn't have its own team participating.
It made me feel like being part of something large, global. Usually we're focused on the local or maybe national things, but soccer brought so many people together without fighting! It's too bad it's over. Well, almost.
