Today is Earth Day and it's celibrating its 40th anniversary! I don't know if it's a North-American thing (before moving here I never heard about it), but I like the idea of making people environmentally aware and hopefully change some bad habits. Even if it's only for one day. Environmental consiousness is about long-term thinking and I don't think many people are good in it. Short-term changes in behaviour for hopefully a better environment on the longer term.
One initiative I heard about this morning at my company is a bike-sharing plan, like we saw initated in Paris some years ago. Great idea! In Paris, it turned out to be a success - thanks to the tourists and the economy - and now it is initated in more French cities.
I completely support the plan, but don't need it for me personally. I'm back on my bike now the winter is over (however environmentally consious I try to be, cycling in the winter is a different thing here. But I carpool). I like cycling and the office is only 7 kilometers away, so that's fine. The only thing is that at some points in the route there are no bike lanes and I get the creeps of cars passing so closely. Next to bike lanes, I think we need volume, so more people on the bike, so I hope Earth Days and this type of bike-sharing plans help!
