Depends a bit on what qualifies as an online community. In the late 70's and early 80's there were several newsgroups (some of them still exist). For most people these were not really "online", you had to phone in with special software. My first experience with newsgroups dates back to 1980 using uucp (Unix-to-Unix-copy).
